Jailbreaking - 1.1.4

February 28th, 2008

Currently doing this, instructions will follow shortly.

As of now this is possible, and if you want to rush into it be my guest. See some instructions here on how to do this.
My aim with this site is to keep the jailbreaking simple. Because of this I am going to hold off on releasing a walkthrough until it’s a little easier.

EDIT: After looking into this, the DevTeam (the guys who do the deeds for us) havn’t released an offical jailbreak for 1.1.4. The instructions above are the ZiPhone method which doesnt have a 100% success rate.

1.1.4 is here!!!

February 28th, 2008

That’s right, Apple have been kind enough to release 1.1.4. Which gives you… nothing?

That’s the way it looks at least. It seems that it is bug fixes and maybe getting the iPod ready for the SDK.
I’m not sure, I will have a stab at jailbreaking it as it can already be done. It was released today and is already hacked.
Instructions will follow shortly.

1.1.3 Hacking Springboard the easy way

February 28th, 2008

I have been trawling the web and have found an easier way to do this… here goes.

Open “Installer”
Click Sources
Add the following source http://madpike05.googlepages.com/repo.xml

Make sure you type this EXACTLY as it is, capitilisation could be an issue

Refresh Installer

Click Install
Click the “iPhone 1.1.3 Applications” category
Select “The iPhone 1.1.3 Apps”
Click Install

Once this is complete you will be told that you now have the wiggly icons.

And hey, hacked springboard

Compatibility - 1.1.3 to older version

February 12th, 2008

You may have noticed that a few odds and ends dont work. For example you installed a nice new theme but it never showed up?

Well. Apple in the wisdom decided to change were some things are installed. And since the install packages are set to install into a set location, making something’s not work.

Now, with the latest version of Installer (you are up to date right?) they (DevTeam) have made huge advances on this. And its the reason a lot of things work with 1.1.3 that didn’t.

BigBoss has how ever added a little extra assistance on the matter with something called “SMB Fix”. Basically it creates a link between 2 folders in the OS. So if things (mostly themes and wallpapers) are installed/stored in the wrong folder they still work.

To install this sexy little update, just follow these easy instructions:

Open “Installer”
Click: “Install”
Select “Sources”
Select “BigBoss Beta….”Yeah its under Beta, but it works.

Click “Install”
Once that is done,
Select: “Tweaks 1.1.3″
Select: “SMB Fix”
Click “Install”

And that’s it, reboot your iTouch and you are done. You would see all the things you installed now displaying where they should.

Enjoy!!

Hacking 1.1.3 SpringBoard

February 1st, 2008

Following the Jailbreak to 1.1.3 you want the new January Software Upgrade dont you? Those lovely apps like Mail, Maps and the wiggly icons. I had a few apps installed at the base 1.1.3 to make sure they worked post update to SpringBoard, like NES. Not sure if this is the reason this method worked so well, but hey. Install a few things first if you havnt already.

Lets walk you through hacking SpringBoard, I have only done this from a PC so not sure about a Mac, sorry.

PLEASE NOTE: Permissions are important and can cause you to be locked out of your iTouch!!!

With that said, I hope you have paid for these features. But most people hack so they dont have to. Im not here to judge.

Pre tasks:
Download WinSCP.
Download and extract Sdelta3

Now we are ready to hack our springboard and gain access to these glorius apps.

Connect your iTouch to the network using wireless. And check its IP address.
Easiest way I have found to do this is to go to the Add wirless screen and press the blue arrow. (Settings > Wi-Fi).

Ok so we know the IP address of the iTouch. From a PC on the network launch WinSCP. Enter the IP address. Leave port number at default.

Now the login details. As mentioned earlier, you need to have SSH. The login name is “root” and the password is what you entered, if you left it default it will be “alpine”.

And away we go.

Now you should be connected to the itouch in an explorer style window. Great, keep going up a level till you get to the root. Now go to: /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app

In here you will see a file called “SpringBoard” with no extention and no icon. Copy this to the folder for sDelta3.

Minumize the WinSCP window we will need it later. Now rename “SpringBoard” to “SpringBoardorig”.

Right click on the file: cygwin1.dll and select Open With. Find command prompt, it should be in /Windows/system32 it will be called “cmd.exe”.

Run the following Command:
sdelta3 SpringBoardorig SpringBoard_patch.sd3 > SpringBoard

You will now see a new “SpringBoard” file. This is the nice updated, hacked version. Copy this file back to your iTouch using WinSCP. Permissions should be correct but you can check them anyway using Properties. It should be set to 755.

Rebood your iPod and you are ALLLL done

Jailbreaking 1.1.3

January 31st, 2008

Ok so the decision has been made to take the plunge into the world 1.1.3.

This CAN give you some nice feature which Apple want some money for. Mail, Maps and the wiggly icons. Mail is worth it to me, its the one feature I origionaly hacked my iTouch to get.

I have paid for this feature. I would like to ask that you do too, either way we can get it installed for you.

Things to do first:
BSD Subsystem - (Found in System)
Turn off Auto-Lock - Settings > General
Plug into the PC/Mac

If you have been playing with 1.1.2 and installed lots of fun features. I have seen an iPhone go balistic with “Customize” and “Catagories” installed. Granted Installer was hidden in a folder created by “Catagories” but I would uninstall it just in case.

Ok go to Installer and select System: click on “Offical 1.1.3 Upgrade” and install.

You will be told that you need to close Installer. Click OK.
Close Installer.
Springboard will restart.
Unlock and you will see “Upgrade” on the home screen.

You will now get a blank screen that says

Downloading restore ipsw: %

You will get a few others and all will count up how far its got. Should take about 45 mins.

Once this is complete you have a hacked 1.1.3. This seams to be a happy hack compaired to the last one I did.

Now I can tell you how and give you a hacked Springboard which gives you all the $20 upgrade did. This does cause some issues with the hack. Some of the Installer Apps go funny, dont install and generaly there are lots of issues so I am going to hold off on this for now.

I am going to keep an eye out and get an update on this coming to the iTouch as soon as possible.

Jailbreak 1.1.3 - or not

January 31st, 2008

So you want to jailbreak 1.1.3 now? Personaly I would say wait, give it a little bit of time. I have done it and will put the instructions up soon but there are 3 methods and I want to make sure I give you the best one.

There are 2 of them hiding in installer, and 1 using iBricker. I will be trying the other 2 methods over the next 2 days and will let you know what I personaly think about them.

The reason to wait? Well altho I can supply you with a hacked Springboard to give you the wiggly icons and mail, there are a couple issues I have had. Like using Installing things that never actualy install. When you do install something the iTouch doesnt restart like it should.

Also all the fancy Customising features WILL be lost. So let me play so you dont have to. I expect to have the answers for you soon.

Jailbreaking 1.1.2

January 31st, 2008

Ok so 1.1.1 was nice and easy. Although 1.1.2 is easy, its a little more involved than before.
You will need a new version of Java to do the jailbreak.

No point staying on this old version, lets update.

Right, in order to jailbreak 1.1.2 we need to prepare the iTouch for the hack.
Open Installer, select Install (at the bottom if you haven’t found it), select “Tweaks (1.1.1)”.
Scroll down till you find “OktoPrep”, install this.

Once this is installed, plug into your PC/Mac.

Click on your iPod

Download the 1.1.2 firmware.

Same as when you restored to 1.1.1, Shift click (on PC) or Option click (on Mac) on the update button in iTunes. It will ask you to choose a file to update from.

Select the firmware you downloaded. It will now update. You wont loose anything so don’t stress, its just an update.

Download the 1.1.2 jailbreak.

Extract this somewhere. Right click your iPod in iTunes and click Eject. If you are on a PC run “windows.bat”, on a Mac run jailbreak.jar.

You will get a java pop-up asking for a root password and if you want SSH. TICK THE BOX, believe me you will need it. As for the password? Your choice, easier to leave it standard. Click the Jailbreak button.

Once that is done, all is done. A hacked 1.1.2 iTouch

Jailbreaking 1.1.1

January 31st, 2008

Ok so we are at firmware version 1.1.1 right? If not, see below.

Are you ready for one of the easiest hacks around? Then lets hack this baby.

On your iPod, open Safari. In the address bar type: “www.jailbreakme.com”.
If you want to read whats on there, thats fine. What we need is at the very bottom “Install AppSnapp” click on that.

Safari will close, wait until Springboard restarts (when you are asked to use the slider to unlock). Go on, unlock it.

On your home screen you will now see Installer.

And thats it, you have now hacked firmware 1.1.1

Downgrade to 1.1.1

January 31st, 2008

Ok, in most cases you will need to downgrade to hack the iPod. There is a hack for 1.0.2 but I have never needed to go that far. I have a feeling this is more for the iPhone, than the iTouch.

I am going to assume you have a back-up of everything thats on your iTouch, if you dont and you continue with the hacks you WILL LOSE IT ALL!!!

With that said, lets begin.

1. Download the iPod touch firmware 1.1.1 use firefox if you can, I have had issues when it was downloaded using IE7.

2. Got it? Right, Connect you iTouch to the PC/Mac

3. With the iTouch connected, you can now put it into “restore mode”. I have read there are 2 ways to do this, but only 1 worked for me. I will put the other up at the end of the post.

Press and hold the home button, now hold the power button. The slider will apear to power off. Ignore it and keep holding the buttons. Once the screen goes blank release the power button only. Keep holding the home button. iTunes will inform you as soon as you are in “restore mode”. Keep trying untill it works, if it doesnt try the method at the end of this post.

4. Now you are in recovery mode and connected to iTunes. Time to roll back, again make sure you have backed everything up coz after this its gone. Right click on your iPod on the left, you should note that the details against it all say “n/a”. As follows:

In windows, press Shift and click on “Restore”, on a Mac use the Option key. You will be asked for a location for the restore file. Find the file you downloaded earlier and click open.

5. Your iTouch will now restore back to 1.1.1. And thats it, you are now ready to start hacking.

Alternate method for getting into recovery mode (may be for iPhone) - Turn off the ipod (slide to power off). Turn it back on, when the apple logo appears, hold down the home button until it shows the “connect to itunes” picture. iTunes will tell you that you are in restore mode.

Another thing, I am not sure recovery mode is even needed for this step. I have done the 1.1.1 hack without going into recovery.
